What is the difference between an endocrinologist and an internist?

An internist manages adult diseases comprehensively — diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol and more. An endocrinologist specializes in the hormonal system: thyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary, metabolism. Dr. Penados is trained in both specialties, which allows her to treat complex conditions where the hormonal and the systemic intersect.

Dr. Penados treats type 1 and type 2 diabetes, thyroid diseases (hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, nodules), obesity and metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, adrenal diseases (Cushing’s, Addison’s), pituitary diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome, menopause and any endocrinological condition in adults.

We accept cash, debit and credit cards, and bank transfers. We do not work directly with private health insurance; however, we help patients fill out the required forms to process reimbursements for consultations, studies, and medications with their insurance provider.

No. The practice is specialized in adult endocrinology and metabolism exclusively.

Do you see patients from other regions?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Patients travel from across the country to see Dr. Penados. She also visits Petén approximately once every 6 weeks to serve patients in that region.

What is a fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid?

Accepted Answer

It is a procedure to evaluate thyroid nodules that require further study. Performed under local anesthesia, it takes approximately 20 minutes, and the Q1,500 fee includes the pathology report and a follow-up appointment to review results.

Do you see patients who have had unsuccessful prior treatments?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Dr. Penados has treated patients with failed polycystic ovary syndrome treatment and chronic diabetes previously managed with insulin that was successfully optimized using oral antidiabetics. Complex cases are welcome.
